A Summer Vineyard Wedding in Illinois: Taylor & Peter

Weddings

Hi there! Welcome to the blog, a journal featuring our weddings & engagements. Stay a while and say hello!

Hi, I'm danielle.

The Barn and Vineyard in Beecher, Illinois

Taylor spent months searching outside Illinois for the wedding she was picturing — state parks, breweries, forested estates, a few out-of-state long shots. She found it at The Barn and Vineyard instead: rows of vines, open lawns, fire pits burning into the night, and a family that runs the place like they’re hosting you at home.

She and Peter were married there on a warm August afternoon, in blue and peach and more greenery than one venue should reasonably hold.

How Taylor and Peter Met

They met in Chicago in 2019, at a mutual friend’s party Taylor showed up to alone, not knowing a soul. Peter and his two friends pulled her in immediately, and the three of them spent the night talking and laughing. The timing wasn’t right then — but Peter kept asking her friend for her number. A few months later they landed at the same bar, reconnected on the spot, and had their first date a week after.

The Proposal at Pinnacles National Park

Peter wanted two things: total surprise, and nature. When Taylor mentioned a camping trip with friends at Pinnacles National Park, he asked to crash the girls’ weekend, then quietly recruited everyone’s significant others to help him plan. A park ranger pointed them toward the spot — a reservoir with a scenic bridge near the end of the hike.

Walking across the water, he took her hand and dropped to one knee. Five years in, she was still completely surprised. Everyone decorated the campsite afterward and threw them a mini engagement party.

Choosing an Illinois Vineyard Venue

Taylor knew she wanted to be outside, surrounded by greenery. They cast a wide net — state parks, breweries, forested estates, in state and out — before finding The Barn and Vineyard through Google and social media.

The vineyard look sold them at the visit. Large indoor and outdoor spaces, multiple bars, and an outdoor cocktail hour area with fire pits for later in the night. The venue coordinator, Amy, was welcoming from the first conversation and quick to work with their vision. As a family-owned property, it felt like home.

“Instead of having to plan a destination wedding, we were able to find a beautiful vineyard in Illinois.”

The Color Palette: Blue, Pink, Peach, and Greenery

Blue is Taylor’s favorite color, so it anchored everything and set the bridesmaids’ dresses. Pinterest filled in the rest — pink, peach, and white with pops of orange and heavy greenery. For an August date at a vineyard, it was exactly right, and it gave the florals room to be the showpiece they became.

The Dress

Taylor found her gown at Genevieve’s Bridal Couture — a Sincerity Bridal design from the Justin Alexander collection. Allover lace, fit and flare, scoop neckline and a low scoop back.

She went in looking for something boho and ethereal with off-the-shoulder sleeves and a floral pattern. She tried on several very different styles and fell for a few of them, but this was the one that felt the most like her. Against the vineyard backdrop, the floral lace and open back read beautifully on camera.

The Details That Made the Day Theirs

A friend as officiant. A close friend from high school — someone who has always felt like an older sister — married them. Her anecdotes made both of them laugh and tear up.

A thirty-second unplugged ceremony. Rather than fight it, they built a window into it. After the officiant’s introduction, she paused and invited every guest to take their photo. Thirty seconds, then phones away. Taylor and Peter got a beat to breathe and laugh, the family got their picture, and the ceremony images are clean of screens. If you take one idea from this wedding, take this one.

A best friend on makeup. Taylor’s makeup artist has been her friend since middle school, which turned the getting-ready hours into the most relaxed part of the morning.

A sticker under her dad’s tie. Taylor surprised him before the ceremony with a small photo sticker of the two of them when she was a newborn, placed on the underside of his tie. He carried it down the aisle.

A Polaroid guestbook. Taylor has always shot Polaroids with friends and family, so it was already theirs. Guests got creative with it all night.

A first look and private vows. The one they’d both name first. Quiet time before anything started, no audience, Peter putting her nerves at ease. It set the tone for the entire day.

Taylor’s Advice for Couples Planning a Wedding

She’s honest that planning wasn’t her favorite part — it’s real work alongside a full-time job, especially without a full-service planner in the budget. What she’d tell you:

  • Book vendors you genuinely like and trust. You’ll communicate with them constantly, and on the day itself you want to hand it over and relax.
  • Get organized early. One spreadsheet with budget, timeline, vendor contacts, and to-dos made it clear what actually needed her attention.
  • Be realistic about DIY. If a detail matters to you and you’ll enjoy it, do it. Otherwise protect your budget and your sanity.
  • Social media will tell you that you need everything. You don’t. Focus on what has meaning to the two of you.
  • Live it up. The day moves faster than anyone warns you.
