Training, Community, and New Beginnings in Central Arizona
I’ve been marketing in central Arizona for a few years now, and each visit makes me feel more connected to the area. One of the first people to welcome me into the community was Jimmy, an instructor at Verde Valley Jiu Jitsu. When he reached out about a collaboration, I knew it would be a great opportunity—not just creatively, but personally. As a videographer, Jimmy brings an artistic eye to everything he does, and working with him quickly evolved into an easy friendship.
Together, we’ve already completed several shoots, and we have plenty more planned. One of my favorite projects so far has been photographing both the kids’ and adults’ Jiu Jitsu classes. Martial arts isn’t something I normally capture behind the lens, but I ended up loving every minute of it. The energy, the focus, and the sense of community at the gym are something special.
Somewhere along the way, I decided to sign up for a kickboxing class. What started as a spontaneous choice turned into an amazing experience—and now I’m planning to join the Jiu Jitsu classes next time I’m in Cottonwood. Watching the instructors teach sparked something in me. I became genuinely curious about self-defense, technique, and the discipline behind the art. I’m excited to return, learn more, and continue meeting the incredible people who make this place feel meaningful.

About James “Jimmy” Sharkey — Muay Thai / Kickboxing Instructor
Jimmy is South Dakota born and is a blue belt under Amal Easton BJJ, bringing an impressive mix of striking and grappling experience to his role as the gym’s Muay Thai and Kickboxing instructor. With over eight years competing in Boxing, Muay Thai, and No‑Gi tournaments, he blends technical precision with real fight experience. His classes are energetic, detail‑oriented, and accessible for all levels, making him a trusted and motivating coach in the community.
About Coach Clay Wimer — Head Instructor
Coach Clay Wimer, an Alaskan‑born Black Belt under Professor Vellore Caballero, brings a deep commitment to fundamentals and defensively responsible positioning. With a background in MMA and his first sanctioned fight taking place in 2014, Clay’s early career was defined by intensity and drive. A back injury eventually sidelined his MMA pursuits, but it opened the door to a new path. Through deliberate, slow, and precise movement, he discovered he could continue competing at the highest levels of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. His teaching reflects that philosophy: thoughtful, technical, and rooted in long‑term skill development.
